The Moosup Valley State Park Trail is a rail trail in the US state of Connecticut in the area of ​​the parishes of Plainfield and Sterling in Windham Counties, Connecticut .

geography

The trail follows the track bed of the former New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad . The route was closed in the late 1960s and opened by the state as a recreational route in 1987. It is maintained by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection . The route runs approximately 9.7 km (6 mi) from the center of the village of Moosup ( ) to the Rhode Island border , where the trail continues as the Coventry Greenway .

The Moosup Valley Trail , together with the Quinebaug River Trail and the Air Line Trail, is a crucial piece in the section of the planned East Coast Greenway between Hartford and Providence.

State of preservation

The path is constantly being expanded, but some sections are damaged. In detail, 4 sections can be distinguished:

Trailhead at Route 14 in Moosup to Barber Hill Road, Plainfield: There is parking at this starting point and the Moosup River is crossed on a converted railway bridge. The road was paved as part of the dismantling of the Barber Hill Road bridge .

Barber Hill Road, Plainfield to bridge over Providence Road, Sterling: Large parts of this section of the route are not yet fully developed. The ceiling is made of leveled split . The bridge over the Moosup River in Sterling has been repaired and given a new road surface.

Bridge over Providence Road, Sterling to Spring Lake Road, Sterling: A new bridge has been built to cross Providence Road . This replaces the original railway bridge, which was dismantled immediately after the railway line was closed.

Spring Lake Road, Sterling to RI State Line: This section has not yet been renewed. The ceiling is made of coarse gravel, so that you can best get around on foot or by mountain bike.

In Rhode Island, the trail continues as the Trestle Trail . there he is maintained by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management .
