Mopan Maya

The Mopan Maya are a Maya ethnic group and live in Belize and Guatemala (Central America).

Originally they lived in the lowlands of central Belize and the Petén region (Guatemala), but the founding of the state of British Honduras (now Belize) pushed them to the western edge of Belize. Today the town of San Antonio in the province of Toledo is the largest Mopan settlement in Belize. Most of the Mopan work in small family groups in agriculture. You are Christianized .

Around 6,000 speakers of the Mopan language still live in Belize today - in Guatemala there are around 2,500.
