Morava palace
The Morava Palace ( Czech. Palác Morava ) is a functionalist building in the center of Brno in the Czech Republic .
history
In 1926 an architecture competition was announced for a hotel that was to be built on the site of the former concert hall . In addition to local architects, celebrities such as Peter Behrens and Jacobus Johannes Pieter Oud also took part in the competition. Ultimately, Arnošt Wiesner built a slightly modified building complex on the site . He not only had to cope with a difficult plot shape , but also an unfavorable building site . During the design, he cooperated with the civil engineer Jaroslav Valenta .
On the ground floor there is a business zone, a cinema and a bar. A coffee house was on the first floor with a large adjoining terrace . Thanks to an ingenious lighting concept on the upper floor, Wiesner was able to build exclusive residential apartments there.
The contrast between reinforced concrete and the clinker brick is also very interesting. Wiesner later designed a connecting structure for the Moravian Life Insurance Company ( Moravská zemská životní pojišťovna ). The project ended in 1936.
