Morenga (novel)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Morenga is a post-colonial novel by Uwe Timm . The work was published in the Authors Edition in 1978 .

The title is derived from Jakobus Morenga (also Marengo), one of the most famous leaders in the Herero and Nama uprising in German South West Africa at the beginning of the 20th century. This uprising forms a focus of the novel, told largely from the perspective of the Germans. The novel is characterized by a high level of detail, and the author also intersperses real reports and documents, which further reinforces the impression of historicity.

The plot of the novel is described from the point of view of the German veterinarian Gottschalk, who volunteered for the German protection force .

The novel was filmed in 1983/84 by Egon Günther in South Africa under the title Morenga .
