Morpeth Castle is a castle in Morpeth in the northeastern English county of Northumberland . English Heritage has listed it as a Grade I Historic Building and Scheduled Monument . It was repaired by the Landmark Trust and can be rented as a vacation home.

history

The original moth dates back to the 11th century and was erected on a hill above the River Wansbeck . Johann Ohneland destroyed it in 1216. In the 1340s a new castle was built in the outer bailey of the old one, but only part of the curtain wall and a heavily modified gatehouse have survived to this day. In 1516 Margaret , sister of Henry VIII and the widow of James IV of Scotland, spent four months at Morpeth Castle when she fled from her enemies in Scotland and sought refuge with her brother. The only major military event in the castle's history took place in the English Civil War in 1644, when a garrison of 500 Scottish lowlands held it for the roundheads for 20 days against 2,700 royalists .

The castle was inherited in the female line by various well-known families, e.g. B. De Merlay , Greystoke , Dacre and Howard , none of which resided there for long. Around 1860 the gatehouse was restored and converted into an apartment for the servants.

Recent history

The castle was leased to the Landmark Trust in 1988 on a long-term lease. In 1990 he had a complete renovation carried out. The gatehouse was renovated in many details based on the historical model and recent additions, such as the swimming pool, were removed. Today the gatehouse can be rented as a holiday home.
