Perm Mosque

The Perm Mosque ( Russian Пермская соборная мечеть) was built between 1902 and 1903 as the first mosque in the Russian city of Perm , located in the foothills of the Urals ; The construction was financed by local Tatar merchant families, the building was designed by the architect Alexander Ozhegowa.

In 1901 the Muslim community received permission to build a mosque in the densely populated Tatar district of the city, and on September 23, 1903, the building was inaugurated.

As a result of the anti-religious measures within the Soviet Union , it was closed on September 11, 1936. According to the mosque's website, ten Muslims were arrested in October 1937, including the imam of the community and other members of the mosque board; all members of the board of the Perm Mosque are said to have been shot. In 1940 the mosque became state property.

On April 4, 1990, the mosque was returned to the Muslim community.
