"Dry bridge"

The Most na Suvom or Suvi Most ( Serbian Мост на сувом, Суви мост; German dry bridge ) is a suspension bridge in Zrenjanin, Serbia . Originally built to cross the Begej , today it does not bridge any physical obstacle such as water or a valley.

history

The bridge was built in 1962 according to the plans of the architect Rada Janjatov. It should connect the city center of Zrenjanin with the Mala Amerika district in the north. The northern pylon is a 23 meter high column, while the southern pylon is only 16 meters high and A-shaped. Both pylons are made of steel and concrete . The hanging cable was made from 103 wires.

Removing the river

In 1985 the city council decided to flood the second river bed of the Begej, thereby allowing the first to dry out. So dams were built on today's river bank. There are now a few small lakes in the former river bed, but the water has been flowing past south of the old town since then. Thus the bridge lost its purpose 23 years after it was built.

Situation today

In 2008 the city council planned to remove the bridge because it had been of no use for 23 years and is now rusting and generally in poor condition. This announcement caused some complaints as the bridge has become a landmark in the city of Zrenjanin .
