Motai Takeshi
Motai Takeshi ( Japanese 茂 田 井 武 ; born September 29, 1908 in Tokyo Prefecture , Japan ; † November 2, 1956 ) was a Japanese book illustrator .
Motai learned painting at the Taiheiyō-Gakai Institute ( 太平洋 画 会 研究所 , taiheiyō gakai kenkyūjo ). From 1930 to 1933 he stayed in Paris , where he met Yamamoto Natsuhiko ( 山 本 夏 彦 ; 1915–2002). Back in Japan, he began doing illustrations for Shin Seinen ( 新 青年 ) magazine .
He later began to illustrate children's books. His best-known works include his pictures of Miyazawa Kenji's Serohiki no Gōshu , which appeared in the picture book series Kodomo no Tomo by Fukuin Kanshoten in 1956 . For his work Motai received the Shogakukan Jidō Bunkashō ( Shōgakukan Children's Culture Prize) in 1954 .
