Mother's Ruin (Swiss band)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mother's Ruin was one of the early exponents of punk in Switzerland . The band was founded in February 1978 by Markus Engelberger (guitar, vocals) and Reto Ressegatti (guitar). Silvia Holenstein (vocals), Freddy Stählin (bass) and Marcel Dubach (drums) were part of the original formation of the band, which gave their first concert in June 1978 as the opening act for Kleenex .

Band name

The band name Mother's Ruin goes back to the colloquial term used in England for gin . During the world wars, mothers abandoned by their husbands had only gin to comfort themselves - and at the same time to ruin their health. The idea for the ambiguous name came from Markus' brother Paul Engelberger, who also wrote most of the songs for the band.

style

Musically, Mother's Ruin could not be categorized into the then common styles, namely they mixed hard punk rock with R'n'B and marching rhythms and had the whole thing framed by original, refreshing lyrics and the strong voice of their singer. Her better known songs include Danny Hot Dog (1978), No more Superstars and Godzilla (1979). In addition to their own publications, the group can also be heard on compilations such as Switzerland Off Course and Swiss Wave - The Album .

The song Godzilla experienced a revival on the occasion of the opening of “The Third Room” of the Kunsthalle Winterthur on February 18, 2006. The artist Andrea Thal reinterpreted the song by the performer G. Rizo.
