Engine operating point

The engine operating point is the starting efficiency (specific operating point) of an engine power in terms of the ratio of drive power (of the engine ) and gear ratio (of the gearbox ).

The engine operating point can be adapted according to the driving situation or under economic aspects. This is done by manual or automatic gear shifting. So it is possible, 60 km / h fifth gear to drive to fuel saving. It is just as well possible to generate a more dynamic driving behavior if you drive 60 km / h in second gear.

The change in the engine operating point mainly plays a role in automatic transmissions. By means of corresponding independent, automatic gearshifts, certain operating states can be achieved independently of the driver's driving behavior and driven in a particularly sporty or fuel-efficient manner.
