Moulton Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Moulton Castle , and King's Hall Park is a ruined castle 2.4 kilometers south of the village Moulton in the English county of Lincolnshire . The castle, whose ruins are now a Scheduled Monument , probably dates from the 12th century. It belonged to Thomas de Moulton in the early 13th century ; Most of these fortresses were built during this troubled time. The castle remained in the hands of the Moulton family until at least 1313 .

So far there have been no formal excavations and there are only a few other sources about this property, so much remains unclear. It is not known whether it was a real castle or just a fortified mansion, why it was isolated and so far from the village, and when and why it was abandoned. In 1461 repairs were urgently needed and in 1531 there wasn't much left of it. Remnants of the wall are no longer preserved today, only a large, D-shaped ditch and some earthworks that are barely noticeable from the streets passing nearby. The only investigations on the property so far were carried out during the Second World War . The British Home Guard discovered 13th-century clay pots as if they were digging a bunker, as did a corridor expedition from a nearby school.

There are reports that some of the castle's building blocks were used to build the porch for the church in nearby Holbeach .
