The Mount Heemskirk is a mountain in the west of the Australian state of Tasmania . It is located near the west coast and was recognized by Abel Tasman on November 24, 1624 as the island's first landmark. The summit is at an altitude of 721 meters above sea level. The nearest town is Zeehan , approximately 14 km (9 mi) away.
Mining
Tin mining was carried out on the mountain and on the surrounding plateau in the 1890s and at the beginning of the 20th century.
