Zeehan

Zeehan is a city in the western part of the Australian state of Tasmania . It is located 139 km southwest of Burnie . The 2016 census found 698 residents. It belongs to the Local Government Area West Coast Municipality .

The city was named after the nearby Mount Zeehan . This in turn was baptized by George Bass and Matthew Flinders after Abel Tasman's brig Zeehaen .

history

The region has the longest history in Tasmania. Abel Tasman sighted this part of the island in 1642. Trial Harbor was an early port for Zeehan, but its location on Ocean Beach made it very unsafe, and so its function was soon taken over by Strahan . Zeehan was founded as a mining area. After the discovery of the silver and lead deposits of Zeehan and Dundas in 1882 by Frank Long , a city was established. The best time for mining was the First World War , but the mining of galena in the Montana and Oceana mines continued until 1963. The population of Zeehan and the adjacent Dundas peaked at around 10,000 in 1910. This was over ten times what it is today.

Zeehan was clearly in competition with the larger city to the south, Queenstown , and as long as the silver boom continued, the city was known as the "Silver City". In the first decade of the 20th century, Zeehan rivaled Launceston and Hobart in terms of size . There were more than 20 hotels on its 3.2 km (2 mile) main street. There was increased activity in the city in the 1970s with the operation of the nearby Renison Bell tin mine , and so did the 1990s.

railroad

Zeehan was a major railway hub - the end of the Emu Bay Railway and the beginning of the state-owned Strahan-Zeehan Railway , which connected Strahan to Regatta Point , where the Mount Lyell Railway connected Queenstown. There were also a number of timber haulage railways running from Zeehan to the Pieman River and other destinations throughout the city's early history .

Some of the narrow gauge railways east of Zeehan were noteworthy. One of them ran the first Garratt steam locomotive that was built specifically for this purpose.

After the state rail link between Zeehan and Strahan was closed, the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company transported their copper ore by truck to the terminus of the Emu Bay Railway in Melba Flats a few kilometers east of Zeehan.
