from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mschesch I. Gnunin ( Armenian Մժեժ Ա Գնունին French: Mejēj Ier Gnouni, Greek Mezezios Gnouni ) was a Marzban of Armenia from 518 to 548. He came from the noble Gnouni family .

Life

The Huns invaded Armenia around 515–516 . During this time, Prince Mschesch Gnouni organized the resistance and was actually able to throw it back. In recognition of his successes, the Sassanid king Kavadh I appointed him in 518 Marzban of Persian Armenia (Parskahayastan Պարսկահայաստան).

The chronicler Samuel Anetsi (Սամուել Անեցի) writes:

"After the Patricius Vard (Վարդ Մամիկոնյան), the brother of Vahan , Persian Marzbane ruled Armenia for eleven years ... The government of Armenia then went to Mschesch from the Gnouni family, who ruled for thirty years."

During this time he was able to obtain religious peace. In 527, Mschesch Gnouni repulsed another Hun invasion. He was also able to take advantage of the tensions between the Byzantine and Persian empires.
