Samwel Anezi

Samwel Anezi or Samuel Aniensis (also: Samuel d'Ani , Samvel Anetsi , Armenian Սամվէլ Անեցի ; * around 1100 , † around 1180 ) was an Armenian historian and chronicler of the 12th century.

Life

Samuel was probably born in Ani , the ancient capital of the Bagratids . Little is known about the chronicler's life. He was probably a student of Hovhannès Sarkavag .

He was a secular priest in Ani and died around 1180.

He was the first Armenian to use the method of chronography (χρονογραφία) in his Hawakmunk i groz patmagraz (Հաւաքմունք ի գրոց պատմագրաց - Collection in the Book of Historians) or Universal Chronicle (Ժամանակագրություն - Shamanakagrutjun) : the events from Noah up to the year 626 of the Armenian calendar (February 5, 1177– February 6, 1178) are presented in the form of chronological tables. To do this, he resorts to other old chroniclers, especially Eusebius of Caesarea . The work was probably a commission for Catholicos Grigor D Tgha (Գրիգոր Դ Տղա, Gregor IV. Tłay “the child”, 1173–1193).

His work is recorded by Kirakos de Gandzak and Mkhitar d'Ani .

The work of Samuel von Ani was continued by an anonymous writer until the year 789 of the Armenian calendar (December 27, 1339-25 December 1340).

Another work is the "Interpretation of the Calendar" (Մեկնութիւն տոմարի) commissioned by Stepannos Imastaser (Степанноса Имастасера).
