MuPDF is a program and library for viewing PDF , XPS , OpenXPS and CBZ files. It is developed by Artifex Software and released as free software from version 1.2 under the GNU Affero General Public License (previously under the GNU General Public License ).

As an independent document viewer, MuPDF is very fast and lean. It offers the user a minimalist graphic surface. With the further aim that functions by integrators can be added as easily as possible or integrated into external applications, the modular source code was kept very lean by the developers. For example, MuPDF is used by Sumatra PDF to render PDF and XPS files.

MuPDF supports the PDF standard up to and including version 1.8 and processes, among other things, transparency effects, encryption and hyperlinks. In addition to bookmarks and the display of comments, it also offers a quick search function. From version 1.2, MuPDF optionally supports interactive PDF functions such as filling out forms, as well as the display of page transition effects specified in the document, as well as the execution of embedded JavaScript code with the equally free and lightweight interpreter MuJS .
