XML Paper Specification

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The XML Paper Specification ( XPS ) is a file format for documents that was developed by Microsoft and is seen by them as a direct competitor to the Portable Document Format (PDF).

history

The file format was first presented on April 26, 2005 at the WinHEC conference under Next Generation Print Path (NGPP) and the code name Metro. XPS was released together with Windows Vista and in the current version 3 of the .NET framework for Windows XP , which has a built-in XPS printer and XPS viewer. In March 2008, Microsoft released the Microsoft XML Paper Specification Essentials Pack 1.0 for Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server.

In 2009, the ECMA published the Open XML Paper Specification (OXPS) standard . This is not compatible with the original XPS format. While Windows Vista and Windows 7 can only handle XPS, Windows 8 and Windows 10 can handle both formats and use OXPS by default.

Microsoft and XPS or OXPS

With Windows 8 and Windows 10, both XPS and OXPS files can be viewed and created (printed). The Microsoft XPS Document Writer creates OXPS files as the standard file type for these versions. During the printer dialog, the file extension ".xps" can be selected when entering the file name. The writer then creates an XPS file.

This can then be viewed from Windows XP with the XPS Viewer from Microsoft. Opening OXPS files only works from Windows 8.

Changing the file extension .oxps to .xps is unsuccessful because the formats are incompatible.

Support outside Microsoft

software

The (Open) XPS format is supported by the free document viewers Okular and Evince as well as the vector graphics program Xara Xtreme Pro 5 . The document viewer MuPDF also supports this format, and from version 1.5 also the Sumatra PDF program based on it for rendering .

With Adobe Acrobat 9, support was also built into the market leader for PDF.
