Mufti of the Republic (Tunisia)
Mufti of the Republic ( Arabic مفتي الجمهورية, DMG Muftī l-Ǧumhūriyya ) is the chief legal scholar in Tunisian Islam, the highest Muslim authority in his country. He is the only one authorized to proclaim religious legal opinions ( fatwas ); he is appointed by the Ministry of Religious Affairs . Othman Batikh has been in office as the successor to Hamda Saïed since 2016 .
The Tunisian muftis all belong to the Ashʿarite theology school of Sunni Islam .
