Mugumu is the capital of the Serengeti district in the Mara region in northeastern Tanzania .

According to the last official census in 2012, 10,226 people live in the municipality (Ward) Mugumu, of whom 4,958 (48.5%) are male. As the only larger settlement in the otherwise very rural and sparsely populated area, the daily market held here is of great importance for the supply of the almost 250,000 inhabitants of the entire Serengeti district. The supply of the most important infrastructure is guaranteed: There are elementary and secondary schools, one Anglican, one Evangelical and one Catholic church, a medical station (Nyerere Designated District Hospital), a petrol station, branches of several banks with ATMs and simple accommodation.

Mugumu lies at an altitude of 1,600 meters and is the starting point for tourists for safaris in the 600 km² Ikorongo Game Reserve established in 1994. The city is connected to the Tanzanian national road T17, where the nearest airfield is located, via a well-paved all-weather runway to Fort Ikoma , about 35 km south . It is thus also connected to the regional capital Musoma in the west and Arusha in the southeast.
