Mull of Kintyre test

The Kintyre Peninsula

The mull-of-kintyre test , alternatively the mull-of-kintyre rule, is said to have been an unofficial guideline of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to decide whether the representation of a penis could be shown.

The BBFC is a UK authority that rates films, computer and video games, and issues ratings . Based on debates in the early 1990s about pornographic representations, a so-called "Mull-of-Kintyre Rule" was passed, according to which an erect penis was not allowed to protrude from the male body at a greater angle than the vertical angle of the Kintyre peninsula in the west of Scotland . The term "Mull of Kintyre Test" is misleading because the Mull of Kintyre is only the southernmost tip of the peninsula, but the test refers to the appearance of the entire peninsula.

A spokeswoman for the BBFC denied the existence of this directive in 2000 and described it as a " modern legend ".
