The Multan Metrobus is a rapid transit bus system in Multan , Pakistan . Construction of the line began in May 2015 and operations began on January 24, 2017.

design

The route of the Metrobus Multan has a length of 18.5 km. The Multan Metrobus serves 21 stations, half of which are above ground. All stations have air conditioning and are operated by a private company. A Metrobus in Multan is designed for 190 passengers. It is expected that 190,000 commuters will use the bus system.

Installation

The Multan Metrobus was fitted with a fleet of 47 but failed to meet the goal of serving +90,000 daily commuters. The fleet was reduced by 10 buses as the number of passengers decreased. The remaining 37 buses could still not handle the passenger volume. A collapse of the bus network was prevented by reducing the fleet to 19 buses. Another measure was the use of double-decker buses . The Multan Metrobus drove losses in the Punjab despite further measures by the provincial government.

Corruption allegations

In December 2015, there was a high flow of money in connection with the Multan Metrobus bus system to the account of the Chinese company Yabaite-China. It was later announced that a $ 17.7 million contract had been awarded to the Pakistani company Habib Rafiq Private Limited. Part of the order was awarded to Capital Engeering, a company closely related to the Sharif family. It was also revealed that CE had passed unusual deals with Yabaite, from which the provincial minister of Punjab Shehbaz Sharif benefited. The provincial minister vehemently denied the charge. Ex-chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, Zafar Hijazi, declined to refer the case to the Pakistani investigative authorities. The SECP forwarded the money laundering case against the Chinese company to the Pakistani investigative authorities after the arrest of Zafar Hijazi. The anti-corruption authority started investigations into the corruption scandal surrounding the Multan Metrobus bus system. Nadir Chatta was charged with violating an agreement to purchase a property. The Chinese ambassador to Pakistan denied the allegations, stating that the Chinese company Yabaite-China does not operate in Pakistan.
