Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif ( میاں محمد شہباز شریف; * September 23, 1951 in Lahore ) is a Pakistani politician of the influential Sharif family . He was Prime Minister of the Punjab Province from 1997-1999 and 2008-2018 .

Life

Shehbaz Sharif is the son of industrialist Muhammad Sharif and the younger brother of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif . He is a member of the Pakistani Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and became Chief Minister of the Punjab for the first time on February 2, 1997 . He initially held this office for two and a half years until October 10, 1999.

After Nawaz Sharif, as Prime Minister , was overthrown by General Pervez Musharraf in a military coup on October 12, 1999 and went into exile in Saudi Arabia , his brother followed him into exile. On August 3, 2002, he succeeded Nawaz Sharif as chairman of the PML-N, but remained with his family in Saudi Arabia. In May 2004 he tried to return to Pakistan. However, he was arrested on landing at Lahore airport and sent back to Saudi Arabia.

However, in November 2007, after a ruling by the Supreme Court, he returned to Pakistan with his brother. After the elections in Punjab in June 2008, he succeeded in forming a coalition government with the PPP as a junior partner , so that on June 8, 2008 he was again Chief Minister of Punjab. It was a reversal of the coalition with the PPP in the central government, in which Yousaf Raza Gilani from the PPP is the prime minister. On February 25, 2009, he was removed from office by a decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan . However, by a decision of March 31, 2009, the Supreme Court overturned this decision, so that Shahbaz Sharif could take up his post as Chief Minister of Punjab again on the same day, which he held until June 7, 2018. On October 5, 2018, Shahbaz Sharif was arrested on corruption charges.
