Mian Muhammad Sharif ( Urdu محمد شریف; * 1920 in the village of Jati Umra (today Amritsar ), British India ; † October 29, 2004 in Jeddah , Saudi Arabia ) was a large industrialist in Pakistan and the father of two leading politicians: the multiple Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the former Chief Minister of the Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif .

biography

Sharif was born in a small village in the Punjab Province near Amritsar (now in the Indian part of Punjab) . In 1936 the family moved to Lahore, the then capital of the Punjab Province, for business reasons.

Mian Sharif founded a foundry with his 6 brothers in 1939 , which was gradually expanded into a large company empire. His operations became the nucleus of the steel company Ittefaq and Sharif became the country's largest industrial tycoon . During the reign of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (1973–1977), a large part of the family property was nationalized, which led to the Sharif family, especially Mian's sons Nawaz and Shahbaz, becoming politically active with the aim of getting the expropriated family property back. After the deposition of Bhutto in a coup and the installation of a military regime under General Mohammed Zia-ul-Haq in 1977, the Sharif family got their previous property back.

Mian Sharif's friend Muhammad Rafiq Tarar was Pakistani President from 1998 to 2001. On December 10, 2000, he and the entire Sharif family were forced to go into exile in Saudi Arabia as part of a political deal . Mian Sharif died there on October 29, 2004 in Jeddah . His funeral took place on November 1, 2004 in Raiwind, Punjab. His successor as head of the family and boss of the company empire was his son Nawaz .
