Multiroom

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Multiroom refers to a cross-room, synchronous audio or image distribution for apartments, workplaces or event rooms. Multi-room systems can themselves contain all necessary amplifiers etc., or be combined with existing sound systems and screens .

Although analog distribution of signals by cable is also possible, the term multiroom is nowadays associated with digital systems for signal distribution.

Digital multiroom systems offer advantages in terms of operation and versatility compared to conventional stereo systems. Depending on the system, a single source or different sources can be assigned to different zones. Playback is not limited to the location where it is provided. In addition, configuration allows a source to be played back in different zones at the same time. Due to the lack of standardization, a mixture of devices from different manufacturers / systems is usually not possible.

Expandability

While analog systems are limited in their expandability by a limited number of predefined zones, digital multiroom systems can be expanded almost indefinitely. The individual zones in digital systems can communicate via their own music clients that are connected to one another via network cables or WLAN . Since in some systems the client works as a repeater at the same time, such a system can be expanded in all directions by adding further clients. In addition, thanks to the complete networking of the system, a single remote control is sufficient to control all rooms. The maximum number of rooms is limited, however, and high-resolution FLAC music files have not yet found their way into every system due to the bandwidth required. Large multi-room systems make use of the option of working as networked multi-channel amplifiers.
