Muramasa: The Demon Blade , known in Japan as Oboro Muramasa (Japanese: 朧 村 正 , roughly translated: "Blurred Muramasa"), is an action role-playing game developed by Vanillaware for the Nintendo Wii . A version for the PlayStation Vita called Muramasa Rebirth was also released later . The game was released in 2009 by Marvelous Entertainment (Japan), Ignition Entertainment (North America) and Rising Star Games (Europe). The Vita version was released in 2013 by Marvelous AQL in Japan and Aksys Games in western areas. Using a 2D side-scrolling perspective, the gameplay revolves around a beat-'em up combat system while integrating role-playing elements such as leveling and questing.

The story of Muramasa takes place on Honshu , the main island of the Japanese archipelago. It is set in the Genroku period, during the reign of the shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi . Tsunayoshi's thirst for power has sparked conflict over possession of the demon blades, samurai swords forged by the legendary swordsmith Muramasa Sengo that crave blood when drawn, and madness and those who are foolish enough to draw them Bring death. Due to the chaos this creates, the powers of the demon blades begin to summon demons from hell and awaken ancient gods from their sleep.

The two main characters are Momohime ( 百 姫 ), a princess of the Narukami clan from Mino; and Kisuke ( 鬼 助 ), a runaway ninja with no memories but a burning desire for revenge. Momohime and Kisuke are each accompanied and guarded by a kitsune in human form. A key figure in Kisuke's story is Torahime ( 虎 姫 ), Momohime's sister.

development

Muramasa was developed by Vanillaware, a studio founded by former Atlus employees. According to sound producer Hitoshi Sakimoto, the game's director George Kamitani was making plans for Muramasa when Odin Sphere was in the middle of development. According to Kamitani, Odin Sphere was an evolution of the Princess Crown narrative. The design was completed by the end of 2006. The positive sales from Odin Sphere gave Vanillaware the capital it needed to begin full development of Muramasa. The game was also co-funded by their publishing deal with Marvelous Entertainment, who sold the project after Odin Sphere's publisher Atlus refused to take any more products from Vanillaware until Odin Sphere released the game. The team's development style was identical to the strategy for Odin Sphere. Some aspects have been changed to make it a unique experience.

music

The music was edited by a team from the sound company Basiscape, which consisted of several composers who had already worked on Odin Sphere. Sakimoto acted as the sound producer, the sound director was Masaaki Kaneko, and the music was composed by Sakimoto, Yoshimi Kudo, Noriyuki Kamikura, Mitsuhiro Kaneda, Kimihiro Abe, Azusa Chiba and Masaharu Iwata.
