Murata Tanryō ( Japanese 邨田丹陵 actually Murata Tadashi (邨田靖) further stage name : Setsuei Sosha (雪営霜舎) Taizan Rōshu (泰山楼主); born 20th July 1874 in Kyoto ; d. 27. January 1940 ) was a Japanese painter of the Nihonga direction of the Taishō and early Shōwa periods .

life and work

Murata Tanryō was born in Kyoto. He began to study painting in the style of the Tosa School under Kawabe Mitate (川 辺 御 楯; 1838–1905). As a member of the group around Okakura Kakuzō , he was involved in the establishment of the association "Nihon Seinen Kaiga Kyōkai" (日本 青年 絵 画 協会) in 1891. In 1898 he became a member of the "Nihon Kaiga Kyōkai" reorganized association.

Murata exhibited at the 1st exhibition organized by the Ministry of Culture, the "Monbushō bijutsu tenrankai" (文部省 美術展 覧 会). After the Japanese-Russian War in 1905, in which he was involved as a painter, he withdrew from artistic circles and lived in seclusion in the countryside outside of Tokyo.

Remarks

  1. Taiseihōkan (大 政 奉還) was the return of the fiefs to the Tennō. This mural was made for the Meiji Memorial Gallery.
