The museum, which opened on December 19, 1988, is part of the Les Musées de la civilization network .

building

The main building, completed in 1988, was designed by the Israeli architect Mosche Safdie . It is a modern construction made of concrete, glass and steel, which with its roof shape and the tower refers to the historical surroundings of the lower town. Two buildings are integrated into the museum complex in the parallel Rue Saint-Pierre.

Maison Guillaume-Estèbe
The 250 year old sloop

The building was built in 1752 for the wealthy trader Guillaume Estèbe, who was a member of the French colonial administration. At that time, the property was on the banks of the St. Lawrence River , land could be gained by backfilling. During the siege of Québec in 1759, the house was unscathed. For two centuries it served various trading companies. In 1959 it was acquired by the provincial government and a year later it was listed as a historical monument. During the restoration in the 1980s, a sloop from the mid-18th century was found, which is now on display in the museum. The former bank building of the Banque de Québec dates from 1812. The government acquired the neo-renaissance structure in 1960.

exhibition

The permanent exhibitions include Le Temps des Québécois , an exhibition on the history of the city, then a permanent exhibition on the First Nations (premières nations) under the title Nous, les premières nations , and an exhibition on the entire province under the title Territoires . In addition, temporary exhibitions take place that deal with world cultures, such as ancient Egypt, the development of cities, the role of gold in the history of America, with New France, but also with Indonesian music, with the history of film.

Like most museums, the Québec Museum also sets up online exhibitions, such as the Place Royale, the city's oldest square, or the question of what makes an American.
