For the flexor digitorum profundus muscle ( Latin for "deep toe flexor"), three muscles are combined on the hind limbs of quadruped mammals:
- Tibialis caudalis muscle
- Musculus flexor digitorum medialis (older name: Musculus flexor digitorum longus )
- Musculus flexor digitorum lateralis (older name: Musculus flexor hallucis longus )
The tendons of the three muscles unite to form the deep flexor tendon . Only in the predators does the tendon of the tibialis caudalis muscle remain isolated and does not participate in the flexion of the hind toes. The deep flexor tendon has the metatarsophalangeal joint two sesamoid bones , the last toe joint a sesamoid ( navicular bone ) and inserted at the Facies flexoria of the hoof , claw or claws leg.
