The auricularis anterior muscle ("anterior ear muscle") is a small skin muscle of the head and the smallest of the auricle muscles . It arises at the side edge of the galea aponeurotica and attaches to the front of the helix of the auricle .
In animals in which the ears are significantly more mobile and play a greater role in facial expressions and social behavior ("ear play"), several anterior ear muscles are developed. They are known as the rostral auricular muscles . A small cartilage sheet - the so-called cartilago scutularis (from Latin scutum "shield") - is embedded in this muscle group . In detail these are:
- Scutuloauricularis superficialis muscle
- Scutuloauricularis profundus muscle
- Frontoscutular muscle
- Zygomaticoscutularis muscle
- Frontoscutular muscle
- Frontoauricularis muscle .
