The quadratus membranae nicitantis muscle is a striated muscle of the nictitating membrane found in birds . It is attached to the upper (dorsal) edge of the eyeball . Its insertion tendon passes through a tendon sheath ( trochlea ) and attaches to the (lower) ventral edge of the nictitating membrane. The quadratus membranae nicitantis muscle leads to a displacement of the nictitating membrane. It is innervated by the abducens nerve.
