The sternohyoid muscle ("sternum-hyoid bone muscle") is a pair of narrow, striated muscle that pulls from the so-called "handle" ( manubrium sterni ) of the sternum to the hyoid bone. It belongs to the lower hyoid muscles ( infrahyal muscles ), pulls the hyoid bone down and is thus involved in the act of swallowing . The innervation takes place via the ansa cervicalis profunda , a nerve loop of the neck plexus .
The sternohyoid muscles on both sides adjoin one another in the front center of the neck and are connected to one another by connective tissue. In veterinary medicine, operations on the intervertebral discs of the cervical spine are carried out between this pair of muscles.
