Museo Frà Gianmaria da Tusa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Museo Frà Gianmaria da Tusa is a museum of the Capuchins in Gibilmanna (a district of Cefalù ) in Sicily . It is right next to the Santuario di Gibilmanna . The museum is dedicated to Frà Gianmaria di Tusa , a Capuchin who lived in the 16th century.

The Museo Frà Gianmaria da Tusa is housed in the former stables of the Capuchin monastery. It shows paraments and sacred objects, mainly from the 17th to 19th centuries, which were given to the Madonna of Gibilmanna or were made by the Capuchins themselves.

Several paintings are also on display, for example an oil painting of the vision of Saint Felix of Cantalice, the first saint of the Capuchin Order, by Ludwig Surick.

The museum also shows wood carvings, for example two figures of Mary and Joseph in adoring pose, which probably originally came from a nativity scene. Further exhibits are a marble statue of the Pietà by Jacopo Del Duca (1520–1604) from Cefalù and an organ from the 17th century.

The ethno-anthropological section shows numerous objects of daily use that were made by the monks and are a testimony to their life in simplicity and poverty. These mainly include agricultural tools and kitchen appliances.

The library archive attached to the museum preserves incunabula and prints from the 16th century to the present day. These include, for example, a first edition of Tommaso Fazello's De Rebus Siculis on the history of Sicily from 1558.
