The Museo Nazionale dell'Ebraismo Italiano e della Shoah (MEIS) ( National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah ) is a partially opened museum in Ferrara dedicated to Italian Judaism and the Shoah .

The museum is run by a foundation made up of representatives from the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali , the municipality of Ferrara, the Centro di Documentazione Ebraica Contemporanea in Milan and the Unione delle Comunità Ebraiche Italiane .

The museum building was the city prison until 1992 and is located in the immediate vicinity of the former Ferraras ghetto. The building, which was completed in 1912, is also an important place of remembrance of the fascist terror, as anti-fascists and Jews were also imprisoned here, some died cruelly or were transported to camps. Among them was the writer Giorgio Bassani in the summer of 1943 .

The museum has been organizing the Festa del libro ebraico in Italia every year since 2010 . In addition, like the Roman Museo della Shoah, which is also still under construction, and some other institutions, it participates in the collection of materials and documents on the Shoah called Storia di famiglie .
