Old Latin School Museum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Old Latin School Museum is a baroque building in the city center of Großenhain , which stands on the foundation walls of a previous building that was built after 1540. It is therefore one of the oldest buildings in Großenhain and is now home to the city's museum, which was founded on this site in 1907.

A Latin school is mentioned in Grossenhain as early as 1342 . It is assumed that the school tradition at this point dates back to the late Middle Ages and that the two city fires of 1540 and 1744 were only temporary turning points. There is evidence that school operations were resumed two years after the destruction in 1746.

On October 24th, 1828, rent agent Karl Benjamin Preusker set up a “school library” here. The idea pursued from the beginning that it should be available to all citizens as an educational tool resulted in the establishment of the First Patriotic Citizens Library in 1830 . It is regarded as the first public library and the root of public librarianship in Germany. Karl Benjamin Preusker also founded a Sunday school for apprentices and journeymen in 1830 in the “Old Latin School”. You should acquire practical professional and general educational knowledge there in order to be able to survive in the changing working world of burgeoning industrialization. In terms of the history of ideas, the Sunday School can be viewed as a forerunner of dual education or today's vocational school .

From 1907 to 1918 the local history museum was located in the building. After that, the house was used as a school again. In 1956 the museum finally moved into the building.
