Museum Soltau

The Museum Soltau is a local history museum in the Lower Saxony city ​​of Soltau . It is operated by the Heimatbund Soltau and the city.

In the back house II the history of Soltau and the Lüneburg Heath is presented from the last ice ages around 200,000 years ago to the 17th century. Objects and tools from the Stone Age are part of the program. In addition to archaeological topics, the cultural history of the city of Soltau and of people in general are dealt with.

The period from the first documentary mention of Soltau in 937 is dealt with in House I. The exhibits include u. a. a complete living room from around 1900. In the attic, various handicrafts are built up in great detail. In addition to numerous objects from the life of the Soltau people, there is also an exotic collection of objects that prisoners from different countries left behind in the Soltau camp , the largest German prisoner-of-war camp of the First World War . On the ground floor there are regularly changing special exhibitions on a wide variety of topics, such as an exhibition about 20th century painters who worked in Soltau and the surrounding area every year.

The two museum buildings are centrally located in the center of Soltau in the direct vicinity of the town hall and the toy museum . The front building ( House I ) was built in 1830 and initially used as a pastor's house. For a long time it was used as the seat of the superintendent of the Soltau church district. In 1989 the building was completely renovated. A small garden with various sculptures is laid out between the two houses.
