In 1978 Hannelore, Mathias and Antje Ernst showed their toy collection for the first time in the three rooms of their private house. In 1984 the doll and toy museum was founded at the town hall. The collection was presented to the public for the first time on the ground floor of the old mayor's villa on Rosenstrasse.

Since 1988 the play museum has been located in the Ebelmeyerhaus , which was built in 1830 and is a listed building , in the center of Soltau (Poststrasse 7). Between 1996 and 1999 the exhibition area was expanded from 200 to 600 square meters.

In order to ensure the continued existence of the important collection, the non-profit foundation Spiel: Historical Toys - Innovative Playrooms was founded, which has been operating the museum since August 1, 2005. The Ernst family donated their toy collection to the foundation. The chairman of the board of trustees has been Gunilla Budde since 2006 . The Game Museum has been a registered museum since 2007 .

Mirror surface under the flying classroom

In autumn 2013, the museum rented additional rooms in the immediate vicinity of the main building (Poststrasse 15), thereby increasing the exhibition area to 900 square meters. The game museum will be rebuilt to be barrier-free by 2015. In addition to numerous changes in the entrance and interior area, the new elevator tower, which is being built on the outside of the facade of the main building and connects the three floors, is particularly eye-catching. At the top of the tower is the so-called flying classroom , an event room hanging in the air with a mirrored surface that is to be used for various lectures or school classes.

exhibition

In the play museum, exhibits from five centuries - the oldest exhibit dates from 1647 - represent a piece of toy and cultural history on 900 square meters with a special focus on the period between 1750 and 1900. In addition to dolls made of various materials, as well as dolls ' houses, dolls ' rooms and kitchens and shops, the museum also shows trains, tin, paper and wooden toys , board games, magic lantern devices as well as teddy bears and other stuffed animals.

The museum not only has a large number of exhibits to admire. Visitors are also offered numerous opportunities to play. There are also listening stations in several places, with the help of which stories about the respective exhibits can be heard.

The showpiece of the exhibition is Dingley Hall , a three-meter-wide and two-meter-high doll's house with 15 rooms and more than 1,000 accessories, which was auctioned at Christie's in London in 2003 for € 190,000 .
