overview

As a forerunner of the museum, a warehouse for cultural goods was set up in 1976. The museum opened three years later. In 1986 a museum's own garden was added, and in 1988 another outdoor area with settlement remains from excavation sites was added. The museum was last given an exhibition room for archaeological materials in 1990. The museum has a floor area of 3808 ㎡, the size of the gardens is 3010 ㎡, that of the outdoor area is 3008 ㎡.

The museum has two main collection and exhibition focuses. On the one hand, it houses the finds from the nearby Sasayama archaeological site, and on the other, it deals thematically with regional specialties, such as woven goods, the snow and the Shinano River . Among the 928 finds from Sasayama there are also 57 flame style ceramics from the middle Jōmon period (approx. 5300 BC) declared as national treasures .

In addition, the museum has reproduced scenes from life in a village from the Jōmon period, which show a typical daily routine in autumn and a burrow dwelling. Another exhibition room shows the production of raw materials and their processing into woven goods in the former province of Echigo , including the manufacture of fabrics with woven silver threads and silk production. There are also historical objects and replicas, such as snowshoes etc., which thematize the snow as a peculiarity of the region. In the last exhibition room there are models, pictures and information about the medieval castle Ōida ( 大 井田 城 ).

Outside there are remains of excavated settlements from the Nara and Jōmon times.
