The museum of the County of Rantzau is located on the Barmstedt Castle Island in Barmstedt in southern Schleswig-Holstein .

The museum is dedicated to the former imperial county of Rantzau , which was founded in 1650 by Christian zu Rantzau and confiscated by the Danish king in 1721 due to the murder of Christian Detlev zu Rantzau . The museum also exhibits the further history of the city of Barmstedt and its surroundings from early to modern times. Particular attention is paid to agriculture and handicrafts, especially shoemaking, which are the most important branches of the economy in the once rural area. Barmstedt was considered a shoemaker's town in the 19th century . Most of the collections come from private donations from citizens of Barmstedt.

The museum was founded in 1910 and has been located in the building of the former Royal Prussian District Court since 1979 , the successor of which was based here until 1975. The two-story house with approx. 200 m² of exhibition space was built in 1863.
