history

Schnepfenthal gymnasium

The museum was inaugurated in 1959 on the occasion of the 200th birthday of Johann Christoph Friedrich GutsMuths. The museum provides an overview of the development of the school and reform pedagogy from the aristocratic educational institution to the modern high school. As pioneers of modern education, the life and work of Salzmann and GuthsMuths are illustrated. The biographies of important graduates, such as the geographer Carl Ritter , are also presented.

The Turnerplatz, 500 m away on the northern outskirts of Schnepfenthal, also belongs to the museum area . This exercise area, built by Salzmann and used by GutsMuths since 1785, is considered the first German gymnastics and gymnastics area and is now a listed building. The Zöglingsweg , recently created with the city of Waltershausen, leads as a hiking trail to numerous excursion points in the vicinity of the school ( Tenneberg Castle , Turnerplatz, Abschiedslinde, toboggan meadow at Herrmannstein, Waldfriedhof).

The Salzmann-GutsMuths-Museum in Schnepfenthal was built in the years 2001 to 2004 with the outsourced, still existing and preserved historical holdings of the GutsMuths memorial from 1959 as the basis, by former students of the boarding school in several thousand hours of voluntary work under the expert guidance of a renowned historian newly designed and built. In doing so, a total of around € 100,000 was invested in the purchase of around 500 new exhibits, showcases, panels, technical devices, etc., mainly from donations from the Altschnepfenthäler Board of Trustees (Abitur classes up to 1945). The museum has been part of the Thuringian Museum Association since 2004 and was successfully managed by the Friends of the Salzmann School (FKS) under the sponsorship of the Gotha district until it was handed over to the Salzmannschule Language School in 2007. The Salzmann-GutsMuths-Museum is to be redesigned with the financial support of the Hessen-Thuringia Cultural Foundation and the Kreissparkasse Gotha into a school museum of the Salzmann School equipped with modern audio-visual communication means with a focus on school didactics, taking into account the past 100 years of recent school history.
