Melchior Neukirch (* uncertain: 1540 in Braunschweig ; † August 30, 1597 there ) was a German preacher and poet .

Live and act

The son of Johannes Neukirch († 1566), preacher of the Braunschweiger Andreaskirche , studied from 1561 at the University of Rostock . In 1564 he was first rector in Husum before he returned to Braunschweig in 1566 and took up work at the Latin schools of St. Katharinen and St. Aegidien . In 1569 he changed to a position as pastor in Barum for a short time before he worked as a preacher at the Braunschweig Petrikirche from 1571 . In 1597 he died of the plague .

Neukirch published several works. His catalog of preachers, Catalogus et historia concionatorum, qui â repurgatione doctrinae evangeliae in ecclesia Brunsvicensi […] (1590) was one of the first printed writings in the history of the city of Brunswick and describes the lives and merits of Brunswick clergy since the Reformation in Latin verse . His six-act spiritual tragedy Stephanus (1592), a Reformation martyr's play in German rhymes, was intended for amateur performances in schools. The preface to tragedy is interesting, in which Neukirch comments on the occasions, content and response to earlier amateur theater performances in Braunschweig churches and schools. In his opinion, such amateur games were very useful for young people in order to learn to speak freely and well.
