Az (people)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Az were a Turkic people whose origins are not fully understood.

The only evidence of the existence of this nation or tribe are the Bayan-piston and the Mugur-Sargol inscriptions and among other things, a few verses from the Göktürks -Inschriften.

There are many theses about the origin of the Az, but they were probably a people of non-Turkish origin who were assimilated by various Turkish peoples.

According to the Bayan-Kol inscriptions, the Az, consisting of six sub- clans, lived in the Mugur region in the west of the Tannu-ola Mountains .

The name Az was first found in writing in the Gök-Turk inscriptions under the section describing the battles between the Gök-Turks and the Kyrgyz . In a battle against the Türgiş, the Az probably fought on the Türgiş side; for there was one named Az Tutuk among the generals of the Türgiş ruler. During an uprising of the Az in 714, the Gök Turks defeated them again. The name Az is also found in Uighur scripts such as the Schine-Usu or the Terhin inscriptions.
