The Museum of Musical Instruments in Poznan (Polish: Muzeum Instrumentów Muzycznych w Poznaniu ) is a branch of the Poznan National Museum . It is located on the Old Market (Stary Rynek 45) in three town houses from the 16th to 19th centuries. The bay window of the corner house on the left was built around 1570.

The museum was founded in 1945 by Zdzisław Szulc, who donated his private collection to the museum. The collections were only exhibited to the public in 1949.

The museum consists of four sections:

  • European concert instruments
  • European folk instruments
  • Non-European instruments
  • Music

The collections are shown in 19 exhibition rooms. The museum has a collection of historical instruments, including violins from the workshops of the Polish violin-making families Groblicz and Dankwart, organ positives from the 16th and 17th centuries, harps from the 18th and 19th centuries, keyboard instruments from the 18th to 20th centuries, Trombones from the 18th century and numerous music boxes and jukeboxes .

The collection of European folk instruments has instruments from all European countries and all regions of Poland, including archaeological finds. The museum has a number of non-European folk instruments. a. Instruments from the Far East and instruments of the North American Indians as well as very rare Mexican Ayacachtli instruments, instruments of the Aborigines of Australia , drums from Africa and Arabic pipes. Chopin's souvenirs from his stay in Greater Poland should be mentioned in the musical collection. Since 1957 the museum has been participating in the organization of international violin making competitions.
