The building

The two-story, symmetrically arranged building with a central bell tower dates from the Japanese colonial era. Conceived as a school, construction work began in 1920 based on a design by Kondo Joro . The building housed the Jiancheng Elementary School until 1946, after which it was used by the Taipei City Council. It was not until 1993 that the city administration was relocated to another location under Mayor Huang Ta-Chou and it was decided, after extensive renovation work, to accommodate both the Jiancheng Middle School and an art museum in the complex.
