The permanent exhibition “Paths to the City of Heaven” is housed in the Palas , the residential building of the Bishops of Brandenburg in Ziesar Castle. The exhibition focuses on the castle with its multi-layered architecture. Relics from the history of construction and use and the existing rooms are exhibits. Based on these basic considerations, the concept of the “two themed trails” was developed on the way to the exhibition. One way, the castle-side, applies to the castle and its building history. With 73 exhibits on the walls and on the floor, it conveys a diverse history of use from the Middle Ages to the present day. The other path, which can also be described as “heavenward”, is dedicated to the history of medieval Christianization in the Brandenburg area and its supraregional connections. It conveys the claim and effectiveness of Christianity, shows the power of faith, the bishops as holders of secular and spiritual rights of rule and their position in the medieval Roman Church, in the Holy Roman Empire and in their residence Ziesar. Both exhibition strands come together in the Jerusalem Hall. Its sacred medieval motifs make it the center of the exhibition. On the one hand, they are significant as findings, on the other hand, the paintings, understood as testimony to the history of construction and use, with their messages at the same time become the theme of the “heavenly” exhibition strand.

This includes the history of the place itself, the history of construction and use of the castle complex, the work of the bishops, their court and court culture, liturgical memorials, architecture and wall paintings. In addition to the research tasks that result from the direct work in the museum, joint projects, conferences and other projects are developed and carried out with various scientific partners. The results obtained are incorporated into the work of the museum.
