The Museum im Spital is a museum in the central Hessian town of Grünberg . The museum, founded in 2007, is housed in the former Augustinian monastery in Grünberg. The half-timbered building was built in the 15th century and a glass porch was added at the opening.

history

A new building area was built south of the old town of Grünberg between 1261 and 1290, which was surrounded by a wall at the beginning of the 14th century. The Neustadt received its own parish church, first attested in 1304 by the existence of a cemetery and consecrated to St. Paul, which later became the hospital church . A sisterhood of female hermits was first mentioned in 1377. It passed into the Augustinian nuns , who built a monastery east of the church in the middle of the 15th century, which was connected to the church by a covered corridor.

When the Augustinian convent was closed in the course of the Reformation , the citizens founded a new hospital before 1535, which served as the city's social institution until 1952. In 1952, the "Local History Working Group" was founded with the aim of setting up a local history museum. Until the 1960s, the former hospital housed the "simple apartments", then served as the city archive and then remained unused for years. A museum commission was set up in 1986 and re-established in 1999 to prepare a concept for a museum and its opening. He developed a “museum tour” at the historical sites of Grünberg and published publications on the history of the city. From 2002 to 2007, the elongated, two-aisled half-timbered building was converted, with a glass porch. On January 20, 2004 the “Friends of the Museum Grünberg” was founded. The museum was opened on September 28, 2007. In 2008, the museum was included in the museum association “Museumslandschaft Oberhessen” and in 2010 received the museum award of the Sparkassen-Kulturstiftung Hessen-Thüringen.

museum

The museum in the hospital deals with the history of the city of Grünberg from the founding of the city to its eventful time as the location of several monasteries, especially the Antoniterkloster Grünberg .

On the first floor of the museum there is a large collection on the life and work of Theodor Koch-Grünberg , a German ethnologist and ethnologist from Grünberg.

The collections are supplemented by special exhibitions, museum educational activities, lectures and a reference library. An audio guide is available for children aged 6 to 12.
