The museum is housed in a historical building that was built around 1620 by Johann Friedrich Thumb zu Neuburg as a Franconian half-timbered house. A stonemason's mark above the southern entrance goes back to the builder Michael Kern von Forchtenberg. Wall paintings from the time the house was built have been preserved on the ground floor and first floor. A mess and shutter on the ground floor shows late Gothic style elements.

Use of the house

The building was initially used as a chancellery building by Hereditary Marshal Johann Friedrich Thumb zu Neuburg, and in 1698 it became the property of the Dowager Duchess Magdalena Sibylla von Württemberg, who housed theater members in it. In 1785 it passed into the hands of a Johann Konzmann, who passed the property on to his descendants. They fundamentally rebuilt the house: Among other things, the east and west windows on the first floor were enlarged and three chimneys were installed. The floor plan of the apartments also changed as a result of the renovation. In 1813 the establishment of a bakery on the ground floor was planned, and around 1900 there was an inn in the building. The old outbuilding, which fell victim to a sewer renovation, was preserved until 1960. In 1978 the remaining old building became the property of the municipality; in the following years it was renovated. In 1987 the museum was inaugurated and in 1989 it was officially named Museum unter der Yburg . The building is a listed building. In September 2018, the museum was reopened with a new concept.

Exhibits

The ground floor of the museum is reserved for special exhibitions. On the first floor there is a permanent exhibition on people from kernels - from the nameless farmers to the local original of " Pfeffer von Stetten " to the Schlaich family ( Ludwig Schlaich , Jörg Schlaich ). One room is dedicated to the Africa explorer Karl Mauch from Stetten . The history of the two districts of Rommelshausen and Stetten is also presented as an example. The newly found medieval moated castle, the baroque castle and its residents, religious and civil life and industrialization are further topics. The second floor contains historical workshops (shoemaker's workshop, carpenter's workshop), a historical bedroom, as well as exhibits on cooperage and on the subject of wine as an economic asset.

The vaulted cellar of the museum is used for cultural events.
