Award practice (GDR)

Museum Council was a title awarded in the GDR in recognition of meritorious work in the museum sector to museologists, academic staff and managers who worked in museums or who participated in the training and further education of academic staff in museums. In addition, the title Obermuseumsrat could be awarded.

Prerequisites for the award of the title were many years of successful work in a museum, in state bodies or in social organizations that promote the museum system to a high degree, and demonstrable excellent results in solving the tasks of the museum system to increase scientific and cultural-political work and the effectiveness of museums in public.

A five-year activity in the museum sector was required for the award of the title of Museum Council and ten years for the title of Upper Museum Council. The titles were awarded by the Minister of Culture of the GDR on May 18, International Museum Day. The winner received a certificate as well as a one-time financial recognition and was entitled to use the title in connection with his name. It was the last title awarded to lead.

Nowadays the title only exists as an official designation in individual federal states. Museum Council (salary group A13) or Obermuseumsrat (salary group A14).
