Musha shugyō

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Musha shugyō ( Japanese 武 者 修行 ) is a term for a kind of pilgrimage of the samurai warriors in Japan. The concept is similar to the traveling knighthood in feudal Europe . The warrior - in this case called Shugyōsha - moves through the country with the endeavor to improve his own skills and arts (mostly in the sword arts). Abandoned samurai ( Rōnin ) sometimes also tried to obtain permanent employment with a prince ( daimyō ) by making an impression on important people or simply by increasing their popularity. Possible activities during the Musha shugyō include training in other schools, duels, personal protection and mercenary duties .
