MusiXTeX
MusiXTeX is a macro collection with which TeX can be used for notation . It is available as free software under the GPL .
Programs such as NoteEdit are suitable for entering notes . With a text editor you can then edit the exported TeX file and finally output it as DVI and convert it to PostScript and PDF .
Alternatively, the preprocessor PMX allows a significantly simplified note input and can also generate a MIDI file in addition to the TeX file . M-TX as an additional preprocessor simplifies the input of lyrics.
MusiXTeX (like LilyPond ) runs under Unices (e.g. Linux , Mac OS X ) as well as under Microsoft operating systems.
