The Kaunas Music Theater (lit. Kauno muzikinis teatras ) is an opera house in Kaunas .

history

The theater building was built in 1890/91 according to the plans of the architect Ustin Golinewitsch . The hall has 500 seats and the building also has two foyers . The theater was opened in 1892. In the beginning there was no permanent ensemble, only guest performances .

In 1916 the stage was enlarged. In 1920 the theater was the seat of the Lithuanian parliament Steigiamasis Seimas . In 1922 the opera theater was nationalized.

The Lithuanian State Opera and the State Ballet were located in the building until 1948. After that, almost only operettas and musical comedies were played in Kaunas.

In 1972, Roma's Kalanta burned herself in the theater garden . A plaque designed by the sculptor Robertas Antinis has been commemorating him since 2002 .

Since the independence of Lithuania, the theater has again had operas in its repertoire.
